The Great American State Fair - Why I attended as a Black Woman.
If you ask me I’ll tell you.
I had a grand time at the State Fair on the National Mall and here’s why…
At first glance, it may surprise you that I as a Black Woman, I even remotely had an interest in showing up to what many have deemed to be a “Donald Trump Cause.”
…but, that’s just the thing.
Who says that this is about the United States President - at all? After all - it's the American people and our tax dollars that funded this initiative. And, I paid my taxes this year.
So I’m entitled to, go-see.
In fact, let’s take it a step further... here we are celebrating 250 years of establishment but it would not be possible without the contribution of my Ancestors...who paid for it all.
While Africans never consented to being abducted and dragged from their homes, forced into labor, tortured and abused for years - who am I to discount their contribution in blood, sweat and tears? The very foundation that built this nation?
I decided to flip the script and take this as an opportunity to not only enjoy on their behalf but to honor them in my own right to Freedom, access to Radical Joy and Truth.
So here’s a glimpse of how it went: Watch My Tik-Tok
Are you thinking of visiting the fair downtown? If you’re still on the fence - then here are a few things to consider...
1. Reclaiming your Right to the Space
The National Mall is often called the "cradle of American democracy," but historically, it is also a monument to Black resilience, organizing, and protest—from the 1963 March on Washington to the Million Man March. For many Black visitors, attending isn't an endorsement of the current administration or its political messages/propaganda.

2. Witnessing a Historic Moment First-Hand
As a massive, 16-day national exposition, the Great American State Fair is undeniably a historic milestone, for better or worse.
Many people—including creators, writers, educators, and everyday citizens—are attending out of sheer curiosity or a desire to bear witness. Documenting the event, the sparse crowds, the exhibits, and the overall atmosphere provides crucial perspective that corporate media or political spin might not show. 4. Networking
Beyond the state pavilions, major federal departments and agencies are rotating through the fairgrounds to showcase innovation, health initiative days (like MAHA Monday), and technology.
For professionals, entrepreneurs, or families looking into career paths, these booths offer a rare, consolidated look at federal programs, resources, and civic operations.

5. Stripping Away the Politics for a Summer TraditionAt its core, the event is modeled after a classic American tradition: a state fair.
For families living in the DMV area, the fact that it is free, accessible via the Metro makes it a convenient summer outing. Many attendees we also from out of town - so I found them to be courteous, kind and on their best behavior.
